There's no such thing as a free lunch...Or is there?

It's official. The next president of Indonesia is former army general Prabowo Subianto. Quite how the next five years will pan out is anyone's guess but hopefully the foreign pundits who always bring up his dodgy human rights record will be proven wrong. Nonetheless, on policy making, Prabowo's popularist move to literally offer the poor 'a free lunch' every day of the week does not augur well for the future. Such a policy - if it ever came to fruition - would cost a phenomenal amount of money and likely lead to huge inefficiencies (food waste) and poor incentives (make people lazy). Another concern is Prabowo's strong nationalist bent. Thus, in the possible event that he finds himself with his back against the proverbial wall in the face of stern economic challenges, there is a big chance that he will simply scapegoat foreigners. Time is speeding up

Time is definitely speeding up. Like it’s on amphetamines or something.

And it seems that everyone is aware of this peculiar phenomenon - and not just those of us lucky, or unlucky, enough to be living in the tropics, where, as I have said before, time seems to stretch out in one continuous long line as there are no seasons to give you a fix on things.

This goes some way to explaining why my posts are getting shorter and shorter: I quite simply don’t have the time to write them anymore.

One minute you’re “jumping up and down on the bed with a baseball bat like an idiot listening to the Clash”, and the next thing you know nearly 30 years seem to have been shed.

So I’m gonna wish you all a happy 2007. While I still have the time. Cos it ain’t that far away…
