BMTH live in Jakarta 2024

This time around Ravel gets it right and BMTH (Bring Me The Horizon) are headlining the Nexfest festival in Jakarta which also features Babymetal. In this format there is no seating - which makes for a much more intimate experience - although you do have to arrive really early if you want to pick a spot right up close to the stage.  We arrived about six hours before BMTH were scheduled to start their performance and bought plenty of drinks to stay hydrated in the tropical afternoon heat (mind you, some of those were Iceland vodka mix!) This was a gig I had long been looking forward to - especially after the debacle last year. Not everyone likes BMTH of course. For deathcore fans the band sold out. For metal heads the band is not purist enough. And for the wider mainstream audience, the band is too heavy. You can't please everyone of course but there are few bands in the rock world which can match the sheer emotional velocity of BMTH. To bring metal and even aspects of metalcore t...

Je-Je Resort, Legian

Well, what a strange place! I only came across it by accident as the hotel blends in very well with its surroundings and is therefore very hard to find. The hotel has a strange “how the f*** do you pronounce that” name (Je-Je) and only a few staff. It also claims to be a “resort” - but that’s only in the very loosest sense of the word!

The rooms (all 21 of them) are on three levels and they overlook a modest-sized swimming pool.

What’s bizarre is the pricing – the most expensive rooms are on the ground floor, slightly cheaper rooms are on the first floor, and the cheapest rooms are up on the second floor! This obviously says a lot about the guests who stay here: they don’t like to walk! But perhaps that’s understandable - especially as many of them are probably not going to be very keen on negotiating the stairs after a heavy night’s drinking!

The rooms themselves are pretty good for a budget hotel, so no complaints there. What could make or break your stay, though, are the other guests. Get a bunch of noisy yobs and it could well turn into a nightmare. Bar something unpleasant like that, this hotel comes recommended provided you don’t mind having to walk 20 minutes to get to the beach. Have fun!
