There's no such thing as a free lunch...Or is there?

It's official. The next president of Indonesia is former army general Prabowo Subianto. Quite how the next five years will pan out is anyone's guess but hopefully the foreign pundits who always bring up his dodgy human rights record will be proven wrong. Nonetheless, on policy making, Prabowo's popularist move to literally offer the poor 'a free lunch' every day of the week does not augur well for the future. Such a policy - if it ever came to fruition - would cost a phenomenal amount of money and likely lead to huge inefficiencies (food waste) and poor incentives (make people lazy). Another concern is Prabowo's strong nationalist bent. Thus, in the possible event that he finds himself with his back against the proverbial wall in the face of stern economic challenges, there is a big chance that he will simply scapegoat foreigners. Indonesia's growing population

One up the ***, no harm done

Now while most economists and financial analysts will have no problem in talking to you about interest rates, inflation, GDP growth rates, bond yields and all manner of other financial data, they will not want to talk about population statistics. This is because they are taboo.

I once tried to broach the subject at an economics seminar in Jakarta, and the girl I was talking to gave me the sort of expression that suggested I had just asked her what her views on anal ### were.

But I don’t care. I’m gonna tell you anyway.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the population of Java was five million.

Today, Java’s population stands at 120 million. And it’s rising. Fast.

By 2050, the estimated figure is 200 million.

These numbers scare the hell out of me.

Where is everyone going to live? What are they going to eat? How much more environmental destruction will take place? What about the pollution?

But I guess I needn’t worry. As long as Bob Geldof is still alive he can hold another concert to save us all. Either that or anal ## is gonna have to become very popular indeed…

World Population Growth
1900 1.60 billion
1950 2.55 billion
2000 6.1 billion
2020 7.5 billion
2040 8.6 billion
2050 9.0 billion
