There's no such thing as a free lunch...Or is there?

It's official. The next president of Indonesia is former army general Prabowo Subianto. Quite how the next five years will pan out is anyone's guess but hopefully the foreign pundits who always bring up his dodgy human rights record will be proven wrong. Nonetheless, on policy making, Prabowo's popularist move to literally offer the poor 'a free lunch' every day of the week does not augur well for the future. Bars have mushroomed up all over the place in the last few years and one of the better ones is Tree House, an eminently artsy affair, which is just about eccentric enough to avoid accusations of being too dull and snobby. The best thing about the bar, though, is the upstairs balcony area which has a beer garden feel to it – despite the use of astroturf carpets! Downstairs a gnarled tree takes up one corner of the bar. This is fine but be careful if you drink too much or you could get a branch in the eye! The bar owners have Italian and Belgian connections and this explains the interesting menu – a mix of Italian (pasta) and more typical bar food (hot dogs, chicken wings etc).

Well worth a visit. Especially since the clientele - when I was there at least - was equally as impressive!
