There's no such thing as a free lunch...Or is there?

It's official. The next president of Indonesia is former army general Prabowo Subianto. Quite how the next five years will pan out is anyone's guess but hopefully the foreign pundits who always bring up his dodgy human rights record will be proven wrong. Nonetheless, on policy making, Prabowo's popularist move to literally offer the poor 'a free lunch' every day of the week does not augur well for the future. Such a policy - if it ever came to fruition - would cost a phenomenal amount of money and likely lead to huge inefficiencies (food waste) and poor incentives (make people lazy). A visit to Taman Impian Jaya Ancol in Jakarta aka dreamland

Located to the north of Jakarta and on the coast lies Taman Impian Jaya Ancol (Ancol Dreamland).

It is one of the few places for recreation in Jakarta and for that reason draws huge numbers of visitors – especially at the weekends when it’s usually packed out.

And the huge complex has something for everyone:

The super rich types keep their boats docked at the marina. There’s also a golf course for them to play on.

In contrast,
those with not much money and who cannot afford the ticket prices for the many attractions often make do with a dunk in the sea. As dirty as it might be.

Family types should check out the wonderful Sea World (better than Singapore’s).

While
thrill freaks will enjoy the amusement park. The Istana Boneka or Palace of Dolls has a tacky yet enjoyable collection of – you’ve guessed it – dolls from around the world. The familiar rides are all there of course - including a Ferris Wheel and a huge swinging boat. Just don’t forget the sick bag.

Taman Impian Jaya Ancol at Ancol

For some reason or another,  Taman Impian Jaya Ancol is also home to an absolutely massive gong:

And overnighters can stay at the Putri Duyung Cottages. The place, incidentally, where a up and coming Indonesian model lured a young man before he was tragically murdered. So if you do fancy a dirty weekend at Ancol, be careful who you go with!
