BMTH live in Jakarta 2024

This time around Ravel gets it right and BMTH (Bring Me The Horizon) are headlining the Nexfest festival in Jakarta which also features Babymetal. In this format there is no seating - which makes for a much more intimate experience - although you do have to arrive really early if you want to pick a spot right up close to the stage.  We arrived about six hours before BMTH were scheduled to start their performance and bought plenty of drinks to stay hydrated in the tropical afternoon heat (mind you, some of those were Iceland vodka mix!) This was a gig I had long been looking forward to - especially after the debacle last year. Not everyone likes BMTH of course. For deathcore fans the band sold out. For metal heads the band is not purist enough. And for the wider mainstream audience, the band is too heavy.  For all-out debauchery nothing can beat Mangga Besar. But there are times when a long and exhausting journey in Jakarta’s soul-crushing traffic jam is simply not an option. Time is of the essence and you need a better deal: something close at hand. In such cases, options in the expat-confines of South Jakarta are extremely limited but one establishment that might fit the bill is the increasingly popular Mangolia Spa located in one of Jakarta's plushest suburbs: Pondok Indah! Home to a good number of the city’s millionaires (multi billionaires, actually), Pondok Indah is to Mangga Besar what Richmond upon Thames is to Peckham – and not the sort of place where you would expect to find a plus plus spa. So what’s it like? Well not too bad. Prices are certainly in the mid to upper range and, if it’s value for money that you are looking for, this is not the place for you. The therapists do try to please but are, alas, far more inhibited than their fellow sisters up in the "Big Mangga". Ultimately, an anticlimax, you could say. But not a bad experience at that!
