There's no such thing as a free lunch...Or is there?

It's official. The next president of Indonesia is former army general Prabowo Subianto. Quite how the next five years will pan out is anyone's guess but hopefully the foreign pundits who always bring up his dodgy human rights record will be proven wrong. Nonetheless, on policy making, Prabowo's popularist move to literally offer the poor 'a free lunch' every day of the week does not augur well for the future. For all-out debauchery nothing can beat Mangga Besar. But there are times when a long and exhausting journey in Jakarta’s soul-crushing traffic jam is simply not an option. Time is of the essence and you need a better deal: something close at hand. In such cases, options in the expat-confines of South Jakarta are extremely limited but one establishment that might fit the bill is the increasingly popular Mangolia Spa located in one of Jakarta's plushest suburbs: Pondok Indah! Home to a good number of the city’s millionaires (multi billionaires, actually), Pondok Indah is to Mangga Besar what Richmond upon Thames is to Peckham – and not the sort of place where you would expect to find a plus plus spa. So what’s it like? Well not too bad. Prices are certainly in the mid to upper range and, if it’s value for money that you are looking for, this is not the place for you. The therapists do try to please but are, alas, far more inhibited than their fellow sisters up in the "Big Mangga". Ultimately, an anticlimax, you could say. But not a bad experience at that!
