BMTH live in Jakarta 2024

This time around Ravel gets it right and BMTH (Bring Me The Horizon) are headlining the Nexfest festival in Jakarta which also features Babymetal. In this format there is no seating - which makes for a much more intimate experience - although you do have to arrive really early if you want to pick a spot right up close to the stage.  We arrived about six hours before BMTH were scheduled to start their performance and bought plenty of drinks to stay hydrated in the tropical afternoon heat (mind you, some of those were Iceland vodka mix!) This was a gig I had long been looking forward to - especially after the debacle last year. Not everyone likes BMTH of course. For deathcore fans the band sold out. For metal heads the band is not purist enough. And for the wider mainstream audience, the band is too heavy. You can't please everyone of course but there are few bands in the rock world which can match the sheer emotional velocity of BMTH. To bring metal and even aspects of metalcore t

Tiga Puluh Music Bar and Restaurant

Every city has a nightclub which has been around for years. A nightclub so old that noone is really sure when it first started to operate. In Jakarta, that nightclub is the venerable Tiga Puluh in the Meridien Hotel. Nope, it’s not the city’s funkiest nightclub. And neither is the music up to much: a stereotypical band from the Philippines (why always the Philippines?) crank out the latest – and not so latest - R&B tunes most nights of the week.

But rarely will you find anyone with anything bad to say about Tiga Puluh. That would be sacrilege. The history here is simply too great. Because many a philandering expat has come to Tiga Puluh seeking a good time and gone home a happy man. The wry smile may be fleeting, yes, but the memories will last forever.

The crowd here is pleasantly mixed, going all the way from the “barely legal” end of the age spectrum right up to the “just-about pensionable”.

The downside is that the prices are exorbitantly high, so if you plan to drink – or to buy drinks for people you meet – make sure you have very deep pockets.

In terms of when to visit Tiga Puluh, the best nights of the week are Friday and Saturday - when it gets busy and lively. A visit on Ladies Night – Tuesday’s and Thurday’s can also pay dividends!

  1. I went to a live music bar nyc and the band playing there were not very good. But the audience was very supportive and were still cheering them. I liked the atmosphere and would go there again.
