There's no such thing as a free lunch...Or is there?

It's official. The next president of Indonesia is former army general Prabowo Subianto. Quite how the next five years will pan out is anyone's guess but hopefully the foreign pundits who always bring up his dodgy human rights record will be proven wrong. Nonetheless, on policy making, Prabowo's popularist move to literally offer the poor 'a free lunch' every day of the week does not augur well for the future. Such a policy - if it ever came to fruition - would cost a phenomenal amount of money and likely lead to huge inefficiencies (food waste) and poor incentives (make people lazy). Another concern is Prabowo's strong nationalist bent. Thus, in the possible event that he finds himself with his back against the proverbial wall in the face of stern economic challenges, there is a big chance that he will simply scapegoat foreigners. But he will have to be careful. Construction of the new capital city, Nusantara, for example, is highly dependent on foreign in

Trashy WNA outstay their welcome in Bali

The lifeblood of Bali’s economy may be tourism but the authorities seem to have finally had enough of the disgraceful and unlawful behaviour of foreign tourists (WNA), especially of the Caucasian type.  Such sentiments were echoed by the Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Pandjaitan, who said that “misbehaving tourists were not needed in Bali as lots of “trash” would harm the island”.

From immigration violations to driving offences, WNA have been behaving as if they are on holiday in a tropical paradise (true) where the rule of law does not apply (not true).

Anyway, the crackdown has now well and truly begun and tourists will no longer be allowed to rent motorcycles. While this will unfairly punish law abiding tourists and badly hit local motorcycle rental businesses, it will at least spare us the sight of some idiotic bogan driving around shirtless on a Honda Scoopy.

Of course, don’t ask why the law was never enforced in the first place to prevent a brazen disregard for road safety from becoming commonplace. That would be far too easy.

Bali will be a much better place without idiotic tourists on motorcycles.

Who can disagree with that?!!!!
